Instagram is going to remove fake follows, likes and comments

Instagram is planning to fight fake likes, follows, and comments by more dynamically removing them. All fake likes and follows from accounts that are using the third-party services to gain more engagement have now been targeted to eliminate for violating the platform’s Community Guidelines and Terms of Use; this is what the company announced as part of policy change today.

However, the users are going to get notified from Instagram that the fraudulent activity in question has been removed, and likely to be asked to change their password, as a few of these apps ask for users’ names and passwords.

As Instagram rises to be a platform for brands and influencers to hawk more products, more accounts are expected to turn to third-party apps unavoidably for boosting the popularity of posts artificially.

Early in this week, The New York Times reported on the phenomenon recognized as “nanoinfluencers,” or folks with as little as 1,000 followers now putting efforts for earning free products in exchange for advertising their items on Instagram. Like with Twitter’s attack on bots, weeding out false activity is possibly something Instagram must require to continue addressing if the community is really concerned to secure the integrity of its ad business.
